Metfield

STATION 366

491st Bomb Group - June 1944 to August 1944

353rd Fighter Group - August 1943 to April 1944

Location:

Metfield Airfield was situated less than a mile south-east of Metfield village off the B1123 Harleston to Halesworth road.

All sites are now private property and permission must be obtained prior to visiting. Please contact Memorial Library staff.

Remaining buildings, etc.:

Some nissen Huts and WW2 Brick Buildings remain as well as one bay of most runways.

Six weeks after commencing operations a massive explosion occurred on the airfield. Subsequently the 491st Bomb Group was relocated to North Pickenham airfield. The base was then used to house a secret unit engaged in clandestine operations.

Memorials:

At the south-west corner of the airfield, adjacent to the B1123, stands a memorial honoring the 491st Bomb Group and other units which flew from Metfield.

A commemorative plaque inside Metfield Church honors airmen from the 491st who were killed.
