STATION 144
453rd Bomb Group - December 1943 to May 1945
Location:
Old Buckenham airfield was situated approximately two miles south-east of Attleborough which is on the main Al1 road between Norwich and Thetford. All sites are now private property and permission must be obtained prior to visiting. Please contact Memorial Library staff.
Remaining buildings, etc.:
Not a great deal remains at this site. The control tower, hangars and the buildings on the technical site have long since gone; but a few of the huts on some of the dispersed sites still remain in reasonable condition.
Although reduced in width, portions of the perimeter track are still in existence. There are remnants of a few of the hardstands. However, the runways have been broken up for hardcore, with the exception of one of them which is used by light aircraft flying from Touchdown Aero Centre.
Memorial:
In May 1983, during the 2nd A.D. reunion, the 453rd B.G. dedicated an extension to the Village Hall at Old Buckenham as a memorial to the members of the Group who lost their lives serving in the U.K. The room contains various wartime artefacts and memorabilia and a large bronze plaque listing those who are remembered.
Another memorial to the 453rd B.G. was dedicated during the reunion in 1990. It is of black granite in the shape of a B24 fin and is near Touchdown Aero Centre buildings.
