445th Bomb Group - November 1943 to May 1945
Location:
The airfield lies to the north of the B1134 Pulham Market to New Buckenham road just to the east of Tibenham Village itself which is about 13 miles south-southwest of Norwich.
All sites are now private property and permission must be obtained prior to visiting. Please contact Memorial Library staff.
Remaining buildings, etc.:
None of the main airfield buildings remain. However, there are a few derelict huts and other structures on some of the dispersed sites which lay to the east between the airfield and the main London - Norwich railway line.
A large proportion of the runways and perimeter track still exist. They are used by the Norfolk Gliding Club who built a clubhouse on. the site in 1975. Until that time the club had used the old control tower, reputed to be haunted. It was unfortunately demolished when the new clubhouse came into use.
Memorial:
An inscribed stone memorial in honour of the 445th B.G. was dedicated during the 2nd A.D. reunion in 1987. It stands in a small plot near the clubhouse. A small bronze plaque commemorating the 445th B.G. was fixed to the internal wall opposite the main entrance to Tibenham church during the reunion in 1990.
