Ketteringham Hall

STATION 147

Second Air Division Headquarters - December 1943 to June 1945
(Previously located at Camp Thomas, Old Catton, September 1942 - October 1943)

Location:

Ketteringham Hall is 7.5 miles to the south west of Norwich, and can be reached along the A11 road and thence left to Ketteringham Village Church.

All sites are now private property and permission must be obtained prior to visiting. Please contact Memorial Library staff.

Remaining buildings, etc.:

Only the permanent building, Ketteringham Hall, remains, presently the Headquarters of Group Lotus. All nissen huts and non permanent buildings have disappeared.

On the ground floor of the Hall were the Operations Section, War Room and Intelligence Section. On the first floor, over the main entrance, was the office of the Division Adjutant General. Also on that floor were the offices of the Commanding General, the Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff. On the second floor those officers had their quarters and a small dining room.

The wing facing the pond was occupied by the owners, the Boileau family, and in the Annex was the Signals Section. At any one time there were about seven hundred people stationed at Headquarters including up to three hundred women.

Memorial:

On 25 May 1987 a memorial plaque was dedicated to those who served in the Second Air Division during World War II. It is on the wall of the sheltered garden seat beyond the conservatory.
